Ep.69 | Dr Caroline Ha Thuc on her residency programme Walden, the ecology of cocao, and on getting rid of discourses.

Dr Caroline Ha Thuc is a researcher, curator, writer and lecturer. I met her at Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong and together we talked about her residency programme Walden, her current project about the ecology of cacao in Asia, we delved into the challenges of today’s discourses, and her role as a lecturer. Dr. Caroline Ha Thuc is a French Hong Kong based independent art writer and curator. She holds a PhD from the School of Creative Media, City University Hong Kong. Specialised in Asian contemporary art, Ha Thuc contributes regularly to different magazines such as ArtPress in France and Artomity in Hong Kong. Ha Thuc’s field of research focuses on research-based art practices and the emergence of alternative modes of knowledge production in Asia.. She is a lecturer at City University HK, the HK Art School and at Lingnan University where she is teaching curating. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Ha Thuc spent two years in Tokyo and published ‘Nouvel Art Contemporain Japonais’ (Nouvelles Editions Scala 2012) about the post-Murakami Japanese art scene. Her book ‘Contemporary Art in Hong Kong’ (Asia One, 2013 & Nouvelles Editions Scala, 2013), provides essential keys to apprehend the city’s vibrant contemporary landscape and exposes the countless links between art, history, culture and identity. She also published a book about Chinese contemporary art analysing the interactions between the art scene and China’s rapidly changing society (‘After 2000: Contemporary Art in China’ published in French and English (2015). Her book “Research-based art practices in Southeast Asia: the Artist as Producer of Knowledge” has just been published in the UK (Palgrave Macmillan, London 2022). As a curator, she focuses on promoting dialogue between artists from different cultures, while reflecting on social and political contemporary issues. Her main exhibitions include ’31 WOMEN ARTISTS HONG KONG’ (10 Chancery Lane, Hong Kong 2022), ‘Boundless Sea: the artist becoming researcher’ at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (Guangzhou, 2021-2022), ‘Constructing Mythologies’ (Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong 2018), ‘Documenting Myanmar’ (Charbon Art Space, Hong Kong 2018), ‘Carnival’ (Hong Kong, 2017), ‘Human Vibrations’ (5th Large-scale Urban Media Arts Festival, 2016), ‘The Human Body: Measure and Norms’ (Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong, 2015), ‘Shelters of Resistance’ an in-situ installation by Kacey Wong in the courtyard of the City Hall (YIA Art Fair Paris, 2015), ‘Hong Kong Bestiary’ (Platform China, Hong Kong, 2014), ‘Radiance’ (French May, Hong Kong, 2014).
