As Anno struggled with his mental health while trying to get his final Evangelion movie into production, Toho approached him and director Shinji Higuchi to do a brand new take on the King of the Monsters after the massive success of Hollywood's new entry. What followed was the creation of a modern classic so iconic, the two filmmakers have continued to make reimaginings of existing IPs under the "Shin" umbrella to this day.
