For some, their experience(s) will lead them to develop PTSD. We know that those who work in our uniformed service professions (Canadian Armed Forces, Police, Fire, Paramedic, Corrections) are at an increased risk for developing an Operational Stress Injury (OSI) like PTSD. Operational Stress Injuries include diagnosed mental health conditions such as anxiety disorder, depression and PTSD, as well as other conditions that may be less severe but interfere with daily functioning. Each year, approximately 1,600 CAF members are released for medical reasons. 1/3 of people who leave the military have difficulty making the transition to civilian life Estimates based on available data show that in Canada, between 10 and 35 percent of First Responders will develop PTSD. From 2006-2016, there were an average of nearly 17 CAF member suicides per year. This does not include Veterans.
