There is probably something you have been meaning to do. Something you have told yourself you will get to when the time is right, when the conditions improve, when you feel ready enough. Alfred Adler, the Austrian psychologist whose ideas are at the center of this book, would ask you a different question. Not why you have not started. But what not starting is giving you right now. In this episode, Jenny talks about the book called The Courage to Be Disliked, which is built around Adler's psychology and presented as a philosophical dialogue between a young man and a philosopher. The young man is unhappy. He has reasons for being unhappy. And the philosopher systematically dismantles every one of those reasons. The core idea Jenny focuses on is Adler's teleological view of human behavior. Unlike Freud, who argued that the past causes the present, Adler argued that behavior is pulled toward purposes. The things that keep you stuck are not simply effects of what happened to you. They serve a function you are getting something from right now. The second idea Jenny explores is the need for approval. Adler makes a pointed distinction between your life tasks, the things that are actually yours to decide, and other people's life tasks, which are theirs to decide. When you spend your energy trying to manage other people's opinions of you, you are living someone else's script. Jenny finds both ideas genuinely useful, and also pushes back on where she thinks the framework goes too far. The question she leaves you with this week: what does not starting let you keep. That answer, when you can sit with it honestly, is usually where things begin to shift. Adler, Courage to Be Disliked, teleology, need for approval, task separation, Japanese philosophy book, self help, weekend podcast, Jenny週末來閒聊, book review Chinese, 人生課題 Powered by Firstory Hosting
