EP029_EN_Thetis – love that accepts and does not control
from OLYMPUS - cosmos, miths and self-awareness · host A. Carminati
From an astronomical perspective, Tethys is a natural satellite of Saturn. It is one of the planet’s largest moons, discovered in 1684 by the astronomer Cassini. It is composed almost entirely of water ice, with a bright and heavily cratered surface. In mythology, Tethys is a sea nymph who tried to make her son Achilles immortal by dipping him into the River Styx, leaving his heel vulnerable. To protect him from his destined death, she hid him disguised as a girl, but he was discovered and departed for Troy.Although she knows he will die young, Tethys accepts his choice, embodying the painful act of letting go. From an ethical perspective, Tethys represents above all the conflict between love and acceptance; like any parent, or anyone who loves, she goes through three stages:1. Absolute protective love: she tries in every way to save Achilles, even defying fate.2. The limit of control: she realizes she cannot decide in place of her son or remove him from his destiny.3. Painful acceptance: in the end, she lets Achilles choose his own path, even knowing it will lead to his death. In the end, one must realize that true love is not possession or control, but freedom…
