謝信中牧師在南加州牧會之初，因為給自己很大的壓力，身體出狀況，一度萌生退意。後來碰到一位即將退休的老牧者成為他的Mentor ，帶著他學做木工，從到木材行教他如何挑木頭開始，細心的解說各種木頭的材質、功用。老牧者告訴他，木頭沒有好壞，只要放在對的地方，就可以發揮應該有的功能。他說牧會也是如此。要耐心等候木頭成長的過程。
