She was the most glamorous star of Hollywood's golden age. Magazines called her the most beautiful woman in the world. She appeared in dozens of films and captivated an entire nation. But beyond the spotlight, she was something the world never expected: a genuine inventor. Hedy Lamarr was born in 1914 in Vienna, Austria. Her father nurtured her curiosity about how mechanical systems worked. As a young woman she married an arms dealer, and while attending his military dinners she quietly absorbed everything she could about weapons guidance technology. She escaped that controlling marriage, made her way to Hollywood, and became a superstar. But she never stopped inventing. In 1942, she and composer George Antheil co-invented frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, a system that prevented radio signals from being jammed by hopping rapidly between frequencies in a synchronized pattern. She donated the patent to the US government. And then the world forgot about her contribution for decades. Today, the logic behind Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS all traces back to principles she helped establish. Every time your phone connects wirelessly, her legacy is present. This is a story about curiosity, bias, and justice delayed by fifty years. It is the story of a woman who was always further ahead than the world around her could see. Powered by Firstory Hosting
