Agnes Varda was the most singular soul in the history of French cinema. Without any formal training, she made a film at the age of twenty-six that preceded the French New Wave by four full years. Throughout her extraordinary career, she used her camera to illuminate the marginalized, the forgotten, and the inner lives of women at a time when cinema rarely bothered to look. Cleo from 5 to 7 put the female gaze at the center of the screen. Vagabond gave voice to a life that could not be explained or contained. Faces Places brought her to the Cannes stage at eighty-nine. She became the first female director to receive the Academy Honorary Award. And she was still editing footage at the age of ninety. She said her camera was her eyes and her eyes never closed. In this episode, we step into the world of Agnes Varda and discover how a lifetime of looking with love changed the history of cinema forever. Jenny Powered by Firstory Hosting
