From 1985 to 1995, a cartoonist named Bill Watterson created one of the most extraordinary comic strips in the history of human culture. Calvin and Hobbes is not simply a story about a little boy and his stuffed tiger. It is a profound meditation on childhood, imagination, freedom, and the world we lose without noticing as we grow up. Watterson was a rare kind of artist. At the height of his comic strip's success, he refused every commercial licensing offer, walking away from hundreds of millions of dollars in potential revenue, all to protect the integrity of two beloved characters. He skipped awards ceremonies, declined interviews, and after ending the strip, disappeared almost entirely from public life. In today's episode, Jenny takes you deep into the inner world of this mysterious and brilliant creator. Why did his comic strip make readers laugh and weep at the same time across 45 million copies worldwide? Was Hobbes real or imagined? And why did that final panel of snow and winter quiet make readers around the world cry all at once? Join us on Thinker J as we pay tribute to one of the purest artists the world of comics has ever known. Powered by Firstory Hosting
