Explorer. Surgeon. Cultural anthropologist. Yoshiharu Sekino is all of these things and more. Born in Tokyo in 1949, Sekino founded his own university adventure club at Hitotsubashi University, then took a year off to navigate the entire Amazon River with a small team. That journey confronted him with a sobering realization: the indigenous communities who sheltered and fed him received nothing useful in return. He could offer them nothing. So he made a decision that astonished everyone around him. He retook university entrance exams, earned a medical degree from Yokohama City University, and became a surgeon. For two decades, he alternated between hospital work and expeditions in South America. Then in 1993, at age 44, he launched a project that captured the imagination of all Japan. Human ancestors left Africa and spread across the globe over tens of thousands of years, eventually reaching the southern tip of South America. British archaeologist Brian Fagan named this dispersal the Great Journey. Sekino decided to retrace it in reverse, starting at Navarino Island at the very bottom of South America and walking back to Africa using only human power. Ten years later, in 2002, he reached Laetoli in Tanzania, where the oldest fossilized human footprints in existence are preserved in volcanic ash. Over 53,000 kilometers. One of the longest self-powered journeys in all of human history. What he discovered along the way was not a geographical fact but a human truth: everywhere he went, strangers helped him without asking anything in return. Across every culture and language, the impulse to assist a person in need proved universal. This episode of Thinker J traces the life of a man who spent his entire existence asking humanity's oldest question, and answered it with his body. Powered by Firstory Hosting
