He was the greatest comedian who ever lived. He created a character called the Tramp. A little wanderer in a bowler hat, an oversized coat, enormous shoes pointing outward, and a bamboo cane. He never spoke a single word on creen. And yet he made the whole world laugh for over a hundred years. Charlie Chaplin was born in 1889 in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South London. His father died from alcoholism. His mother was committed to a mental institution. He dropped out of school at seven and began performing on stage at ten. He transformed every hardship into art. He made Modern Times to criticize the way industrial capitalism turned people into machines. He made The Great Dictator to ridicule fascism at the peak of its terrifying power. He made City Lights as a love letter to every person who has ever been invisible to the world. In the end, the American government expelled him from the country where he had lived and worked for forty years. In 1972, America finally made amends. They gave him an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. The audience gave him a twelve-minute standing ovation. The longest in Academy Awards history. He once said that life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot. Join us today as we rediscover the genius who wrapped tears inside laughter, and whose voice, though never heard on screen, still echoes across the world. Powered by Firstory Hosting
