He was one of the most important voices of the twentieth century. Born into a working-class family in Liverpool, young John Lennon lost his mother and built a new home out of music. The songs he co-wrote with Paul McCartney rewrote the history of popular music, and Beatlemania swept across the world, giving a whole generation a new language to speak. But John Lennon was more than a rock star. He was someone who chose to keep fighting after the band broke up. He opposed the Vietnam War, organized demonstrations, and was considered a threat by the American government. His song called Imagine became one of the greatest anti-war statements of the twentieth century, still being played at protests, funerals, and celebrations around the world. On December 8, 1980, he was shot and killed outside his apartment building in New York City. He was forty years old. That day, the world held its breath. In this episode, Jenny walks you through the full arc of John Lennon's life: from a broken family to a world stage, from rock legend to peace martyr. A man of contradictions. A deeply human man. The man who taught us all to say Imagine. Powered by Firstory Hosting
