He lived only thirty-six years, yet he changed the way the entire world thinks about colonialism and identity. Frantz Fanon was born in 1925 on Martinique, a Caribbean island and French overseas territory. His childhood was shaped by a deep contradiction: his textbooks declared that his ancestors were Gauls, but the mirror showed him a Black face. That fracture became the starting point of his life's intellectual mission. Trained as a psychiatrist and veteran of World War II, Fanon worked in Algeria as a psychiatric ward chief and witnessed how colonialism destroyed not just bodies but the inner lives of both the colonized and the colonizer. His landmark books Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth remain foundational texts of postcolonial studies to this day. He ultimately resigned his medical post to join the Algerian National Liberation Front, spending his final years in exile and revolution. Leukemia took his life at thirty-six, but his ideas never stopped spreading. Che Guevara read him. The Black Panthers read him. Palestinian liberation movements read him. Today, when we talk about identity politics, immigration, and racial justice, we are standing at a door that Fanon opened. Join Jenny as we explore the extraordinary, blazing life of this thinker who gave everything he had. Frantz Fanon, postcolonialism, Thinker J, Tribute to the Masters Powered by Firstory Hosting
