He wrote the song called Farewell, a melody that Chinese people have been singing for more than a century. And yet at the age of thirty-nine, at the height of his powers, he chose to become a Buddhist monk. One patched robe, one pair of straw sandals. He spent the rest of his life in quiet devotion, walking with his eyes on the ground so as not to harm the smallest creature. His final written words were four characters meaning sorrow and joy intertwined. His name was Li Shutong. His dharma name was Hongyi. His famous student Feng Zikai described human life as a building with three floors. Most people live on the first floor their whole lives.
