He was simultaneously a Cambridge scholar, a senior official at the British Treasury, a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group, a pioneer of what we would now call hedge fund investing, and a generous patron of the arts. When the Great Depression swept the world in 1929 and mainstream economists told people to wait for markets to heal, Keynes delivered his famous verdict: in the long run, we are all dead. He refused to accept any framework that dismissed present suffering in favor of distant theoretical equilibrium. He systematically rebuilt the foundations of economics, arguing that governments have a responsibility to intervene actively using fiscal spending to sustain demand and protect employment. This body of ideas, known as Keynesian economics, shaped the remarkable prosperity of the postwar decades. But Keynes was far more than an academic.
