How well do you actually know yourself? You might think you understand your own decisions and feelings. But Sigmund Freud had a different view. He said most of what drives us moves in the dark, far beyond the reach of conscious awareness. Freud is one of the most influential and most debated thinkers of the twentieth century. The unconscious, dream interpretation, the id and ego and superego, the Oedipus complex, repression and projection. These concepts have become part of everyday language worldwide. But the story behind them, and the man who created them, is far more complex and surprising than most people realize. In this episode, Jenny explores the full arc of Freud's extraordinary life. From a Jewish family in a small Moravian town, to the intellectual revolutions of Vienna, to his forced exile in London as the Nazis rose to power. We also take an honest look at the central controversy surrounding his legacy. Was psychoanalysis science or belief system? What has modern neuroscience confirmed, and what has it overturned? And what does Freud leave us with that still matters today? This is a story about how humans came to take their inner lives seriously.
