She only asked if you felt something. Pina Bausch was the founder of Tanztheater, the German dance theater movement, and one of the most important dance artists of the twentieth century. Born in 1940 in Solingen, Germany, she grew up in her parents inn and restaurant, watching people. How they moved. How they pretended to smile. That fascination with human movement became the core of her entire artistic life. In 1969, she took over the Wuppertal dance company and created an art form the world had never seen. She did not give her dancers movements to perform. She gave them questions to answer. When you are afraid, how does your body move? When you love someone but cannot say it, what do your hands do? Her landmark works including The Rite of Spring, Cafe Muller, and Nelken are still performed around the world today. She transformed dance into the most honest form of psychological exploration and shaped an entire generation of choreographers. In 2009, she died suddenly just two days before her sixty-ninth birthday. The world was stunned. Like the dancers in her own works, she vanished without warning or farewell. But the questions she asked are still there, waiting for us to answer them.
