Yasunari Kawabata lost his father at age one, his mother at three, his grandmother at seven, and his grandfather at sixteen. By the time he reached adulthood, he had already learned to live alongside grief as a constant companion. And yet, or perhaps because of this, he became the most luminous voice of Japanese literary beauty. His masterworks, including Snow Country, Thousand Cranes, and The Old Capital, gave the world its deepest introduction to the aesthetic concept of mono no aware: the bittersweet awareness of impermanence that the Japanese believe lies at the heart of all true beauty. In 1968, he became the first Japanese writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. His acceptance speech in Stockholm remains one of the most poetic in the history of the prize. When his beloved protege Yukio Mishima died by ritual suicide in 1970, something in Kawabata shifted. In 1972, he quietly took his own life, leaving no note behind. Like the tragic women in his own novels, he vanished at a moment of beauty, leaving a silence that still echoes today. In this episode, Jenny takes you through the long mountain tunnel and into the snow country: the white, sorrowful, beautiful world of Yasunari Kawabata. Powered by Firstory Hosting
