Angela Davis lived through the most critical decades of the American civil rights struggle, and she did not simply observe from the sidelines. She was in the center of the storm. Born in racially segregated Birmingham, Alabama, Angela grew up understanding that the world treated Black people unjustly. She responded not with resignation but with rigorous intellectual work and courageous action. She studied philosophy in Germany under the legendary Herbert Marcuse, then returned to the United States where she joined the Communist Party, taught at UCLA, and was fired by order of Governor Ronald Reagan because of her political beliefs. In 1970, a courthouse shooting made her a fugitive. She was hunted, captured, and held in jail for nearly two years before a jury declared her not guilty on all charges. But the Angela Davis story is far more than a legal victory. She developed and championed the theory of prison abolitionism, arguing that the American carceral system is a direct extension of slavery.
