He gave up a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris to become a painter, eventually sailing to Tahiti at the age of 43 in search of a rawer, more authentic way of life. His bold use of flat color, thick outlines, and emotionally charged imagery broke decisively from Impressionism and laid the groundwork for Fauvism, Expressionism, and much of what we now call modern art. His monumental painting titled Where Do We Come From, What Are We, Where Are We Going is considered one of the greatest philosophical statements in the history of visual art. Yet Gauguin was also a deeply contradictory man who abandoned his family and whose life in the Pacific raises serious ethical questions by any modern standard.
