His invention of the Haber-Bosch process transformed nitrogen from the air into ammonia, making possible the chemical fertilizers that today support more than half of the world's population. Some scholars estimate that without his discovery, the earth could sustain no more than four billion people. In a very real sense, roughly four billion people alive today exist because of Fritz Haber. Yet this same man led the first large-scale chemical weapons attack in human history. At Ypres in April 1915, under his direction, German forces released 168 tons of chlorine gas, causing at least fifteen thousand casualties. His wife Clara, the first woman in Germany to earn a doctorate in chemistry, took her own life in protest of his actions. Haber was a passionate German patriot who considered himself German before Jewish. Yet when the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was expelled from the country he had served so faithfully, on the basis of his Jewish ancestry. He died in exile, and the chemical technology he helped develop was later adapted by the Nazi regime to murder members of his own people. This episode explores Haber's extraordinary life and asks the questions his story forces us to confront: How much responsibility does a scientist bear for what their discoveries are used for?
