EP312 with Justin Grant: Resilience Is a Skill That Can Be Taught

from Fatherhood Field Notes

As a sports medicine physician and coach, Justin Grant knows it's not just the destination but the journey that matters most. This father-to-four, married to his wife for ten years, opens up about how as a lifelong athlete, he is rebelling against the idea that sport is only about winning.  Striving to win provides an opportunity for character development, but losing sight of character development in the pursuit of winning also loses the purpose of sport and of "winning" itself. One of the most important character traits we can develop through the pursuit of winning is resilience or mental toughness.Justin shares his insight on how to balance parenting and raising athletes with unconditional love and being truly present. He opens up about how his father's anger issues in his childhood affected parenting his own children. Life is hard. If we don't have a certain level of resilience, we're just simply not going to thrive.  Our children need to develop mental and emotional resilience and it's our role to help nurture that in our homes. It can be taught and Justin shares practical tips on how to learn this alongside your children. Justin Grant is a Christian husband and father to four beautiful children. Professionally, he is a rural sports medicine physician and owner/founder of Athlos Life where he and his wife forge Lifelong Athletes for a Higher purpose. My blog posts, especially "Occlumency" and "70.3 Miles Into The Pain Cave To Find Why" will help provide some good background and fuel for discussion.
