Sylvia Plath. A name that carries the weight of the most unbearable honesty in twentieth-century literature. She lost her father at eight years old, and turned that wound into a lifelong creative source. She graduated summa cum laude from Smith College, won a Fulbright scholarship to Cambridge, and there met British poet Ted Hughes, beginning a marriage charged with passion and tension. Her poetry collection Ariel was written during the coldest English winter in decades. Every morning at four, while her children slept, she wrote at a pace that bordered on ferocious. Those poems are now recognized as among the most important works of English-language poetry in the twentieth century. Her novel The Bell Jar used the image of a young woman trapped beneath a glass dome to capture both the experience of depression and the suffocating expectations placed on women in 1950s America. Decades later, readers around the world still find themselves recognized in its pages. She lived only thirty years. But her words have been burning for over sixty years, and show no sign of stopping. Today, Jenny walks you into her story. Not to mourn. But to witness how one person used language to forge gold from pain. Powered by Firstory Hosting
