She was the only daughter among seven children in a Mexican immigrant family in Chicago, a girl who never quite had a fixed home growing up. Her name is Sandra Cisneros, and with one slim novel called The House on Mango Street, she captured the real, marginalized lives of Latina women and quietly redrew the map of American literature. In this episode of our Tribute to the Masters series, we trace the full arc of this foundational voice in Chicana literature, from the sting of shame she felt at the Iowa Writers Workshop, to a novel that has now sold more than six million copies in over twenty languages, from the famous purple house dispute in San Antonio, to the Macondo Writers Workshop she founded to support an entire generation of Latino writers, from the National Medal of Arts presented to her by President Obama, to the quiet life she now leads in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This is a story about home, identity, and finally being heard. A true home, it turns out, may never be an address at all. It may simply be the truth we are finally willing to speak. Join Jenny on Thinker J as we get to know Sandra Cisneros. Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street, Chicana literature, Powered by Firstory Hosting
