Did you know the theory of evolution was not discovered by just one man? In eighteen fifty eight, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace independently arrived at the same revolutionary idea within days of each other. One was a wealthy English gentleman who spent twenty cautious years gathering evidence. The other was a self taught explorer who had a sudden flash of insight while suffering from malarial fever deep in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Darwin went on to publish On the Origin of Species and became immortalized in science history. Wallace, despite his equally brilliant insight, faded into relative obscurity. Yet this is not a story of bitter rivalry. Darwin later helped secure Wallace a government pension, and the two men remained genuine friends until the end of their lives. In this episode of Thinker J, Jenny takes you through the real story behind one of historys most famous scientific discoveries, from the finches of the Galapagos to the quiet, almost forgettable meeting at the Linnean Society, and from the Wallace Line to Wallaces surprisingly progressive social views. If you thought evolution belonged to just one name, this episode might change your mind about who truly deserves to be remembered.
