One man said a house is a machine for living in. The other said a house should grow out of the earth like a living thing. In this episode of Thinker J, Jenny takes you into one of the greatest rivalries in the history of architecture: Le Corbusier against Frank Lloyd Wright. Le Corbusier came from a Swiss watchmaking town and grew up understanding precision and order. He was also a painter who simplified the world into pure geometry. He gave us his five points of architecture and the floating white Villa Savoye, and he imagined packing an entire way of life into a single vertical village. Wright came from a farm in Wisconsin and grew up close to soil and prairie. He believed in organic architecture and built a house directly over a waterfall, creating the breathtaking Fallingwater. Best of all, we imagine a debate between them about the city itself. The tower city that grows upward against the earth city that spreads outward. That debate has never truly ended. They did not get along, yet in their final years both took surprising turns and together they reshaped the world we live in. After this episode you will never look at a building the same way again. Powered by Firstory Hosting
