He was born in a remote mountain village in Fujian Province. His father was a rural Christian pastor. Yet he spent more than two years on the American bestseller list. He gave the world a completely new way of seeing Chinese culture. His name was Lin Yutang. Born in Fujian in 1895, Lin Yutang built his English at St. John's University in Shanghai and went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Leipzig. Back in China he taught at universities in Beijing and Shanghai and edited literary magazines known for humor and social commentary. He was also one of the first to render the English word humor into the Chinese term youmo. In 1935 he published My Country and My People, and in 1937 The Importance of Living. Both books gave Western readers their first genuine human-scale understanding of China and Chinese philosophy. He also spent decades working on a Chinese typewriter, eventually receiving a patent -- though the project consumed much of his savings. He said he had no regrets. He settled in Taipei in his later years and died in Hong Kong in 1976. Today on Thinker J, we walk into the life of the man who built his bridge out of laughter. Powered by Firstory Hosting
