But she was the person that conservative politicians in America least wanted to face in a courtroom. Her name was Ruth Bader Ginsburg. People called her RBG. Born in Brooklyn in 1933, she was one of only nine women in her Harvard Law School class, graduated at the top of her class at Columbia Law School, and then discovered that no law firm would hire her because she was a woman, Jewish, and a mother. She did not get angry. She entered academia. In 1972 she founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union and began dismantling gender discrimination in American law one case at a time, cleverly choosing cases where men were the victims of discrimination so that male judges could understand what it felt like. In 1993 she became only the second woman ever appointed to the US Supreme Court. During her tenure she faced serious illness four times and returned to the bench each time within weeks of surgery.
