Born in Tokyo in 1952, Ryuichi Sakamoto was one of the most influential Japanese composers of the twentieth century. He co-founded the groundbreaking electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, blending Eastern aesthetics with Western electronic textures and giving global listeners their first taste of that distinctive cool and futuristic sound. In 1983 he starred in Nagisa Oshima's film alongside rock legend David Bowie, and composed a theme so powerful it is still his most widely recognized work. In 1987 he scored Bernardo Bertolucci's epic film The Last Emperor, taking the Academy Award stage and writing Japanese compositional history. After the Fukushima disaster in 2011 he became one of the most prominent voices in Japan opposing nuclear power. In 2021 he was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. He did not stop composing. He said music is a gift to the living. In January 2023 he released his final album titled 12. In March of that year he left the world.
