In 1984 he founded what became KDDI, now Japan's second largest telecommunications company. Both became world-class enterprises. His management philosophy had one central question: as a human being, is this the right thing to do? He applied that question to every decision, from hiring to restructuring. In 1997 he was ordained as a Buddhist monk. In 2010, at the age of seventy-eight, he was asked by the Japanese government to take over bankrupt Japan Airlines. He said he knew nothing about the airline industry. But he took the question with him. Two and a half years later Japan Airlines was profitable again. In 2012 it returned to the stock exchange. He died in 2022 at the age of ninety.
