Through the 1990s and 2000s, Chinese cities were expanding at a pace with no precedent in history. Villages were leveled. Historic buildings were demolished. Wang Shu said watching it felt like watching a great fire. He chose to bend down and pick up the pieces. When building the Ningbo History Museum, his team collected approximately six million old bricks and tiles from more than twenty villages in the surrounding region that were being or had already been demolished. Those pieces were set one by one into the museum's walls. The result was a surface that read like a history book written in brick. In 2012, Wang Shu received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, becoming the first Chinese architect to do so. The jury said his work raised essential questions about what modernity means and whether it must stand in opposition to tradition. Today on Thinker J, we follow the story of an architect who insisted on memory in an era of forgetting. Powered by Firstory Hosting
