But almost everyone who quotes them misunderstands what he meant. Nan De Hu Tu is often translated as it is rare to be wisely confused. He did not mean real confusion. He meant something far more demanding: seeing everything clearly, and choosing not to get tangled up in all of it. Knowing what the other person is calculating and deciding to move forward anyway. Choosing not to exhaust yourself chasing answers that do not exist. Zheng Banqiao served as a county magistrate in Shandong during the Qing dynasty. When drought struck and people were starving, he opened the government granaries himself without waiting for official approval. He refused all gifts during his years in office. He painted bamboo not for its beauty but for what it represented: humility, integrity, and perseverance through every storm. He eventually resigned rather than accept a promotion that would take him away from the people he served. His calligraphy mixed five different classical scripts into something entirely his own. When scholars told him this was improper, he said yes, exactly, that is the point. In this episode we tell the full story of Zheng Banqiao.
