Florence Nightingale did exactly that. Born in 1820 in Florence, Italy, into a wealthy family, Nightingale received an outstanding education from a young age, but at seventeen she felt a calling to serve. Despite fierce opposition from her family, she insisted on traveling to Germany to receive formal nursing training. When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Nightingale led thirty eight nurses to the military hospital at Scutari in Turkey, launching a sweeping sanitary reform that brought the death rate down from over forty percent to under three percent. After the war ended, she did not stop there. She invented an entirely new statistical chart, later known as the rose diagram, using visual design to help the government and even the Queen understand that disease killed far more soldiers than combat did. In 1859 she became the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society. In 1860 she founded the Nightingale Training School, formally establishing nursing as a profession. In her later years she was confined to bed for decades, yet never stopped writing or pushing for reform, until her death in 1910 at the age of ninety.
