Epicurus has been misunderstood for two thousand years. His name became almost synonymous with indulgence and excess. But what he actually described as the highest happiness was a quiet garden, a few true friends, a bowl of water and a piece of bread. He welcomed women, enslaved people, and foreigners into his school — a radical act in ancient Greek society. His question was simple: in a world of constant change, how should I live? His answer pointed not toward acquiring more, but toward reducing what disturbs the mind: unnecessary desires, the fear of punishment, and above all, the fear of death. His argument about death became one of philosophy's most famous sentences: when we exist, death is not present; when death arrives, we are no longer here. Therefore death is never an experience we actually have. In this episode, Jenny explores why this ancient philosopher, so long misread, may offer the clearest guidance of any thinker for navigating the anxiety of modern life. Powered by Firstory Hosting
