白先勇一九三七年出生廣西桂林，父親白崇禧是國民政府核心將領。一九四九年他十二歲隨家人來台灣。大學時代創辦現代文學雜誌，後在愛荷華大學讀創作，又在加州大學聖芭芭拉分校教中國文學數十年。 他的代表作台北人由十四個故事組成，說的是從大陸來台的一群人——曾經的將軍、曾經的名媛、曾經的大家閨秀——帶著那個再也回不去的過去在台北繼續活著。那個失去之後的繼續說的是他文學最深的主題。晚年他製作青春版牡丹亭，以年輕演員讓崑曲在全世界巡演超過四百場，讓古代的美在今天繼續被看見。 Born in Guilin, Guangxi in 1937, Pai Hsien-yung is the son of General Pai Chung-hsi, a core figure of the Nationalist government. He came to Taiwan with his family at twelve in 1949. At university he co-founded Modern Literature magazine; he later studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop and taught Chinese literature at UC Santa Barbara for decades. His masterwork Taipei People collects fourteen stories of people who came from mainland China — former generals, former socialites, former refined ladies — carrying a past they can never return to as they continue living in Taipei. That continuing after loss speaks of the deepest theme in his literature.
