While working in French-colonized Algeria he observed a pattern: many of his Algerian patients' psychiatric symptoms were not simply individual psychological problems. Their source was the structure of colonialism itself. He said colonialism's destruction of people is first psychological — it makes the colonized see themselves through the colonizer's eyes and measure themselves by the colonizer's standards. He secretly joined the Algerian National Liberation Front and was later expelled by the French authorities. After being diagnosed with leukemia, he dictated The Wretched of the Earth from his sickbed. That book argued that decolonization is not simply driving out the colonizer — it must restore to the colonized the ability to see themselves through their own eyes. He died in 1961 at thirty-six.
