Ep5: At least know this! Basics of critical thinking with Dr. Pat Croskerry, MD PhD

from Girl Doc Survival Guide · host Christine Ko

Do you know the HOW of making decisions? This is for everyone, as we all make decisions every day. Additionally, diagnosis is a decision, and it is one of the most treasured skills of physicians. To optimize decision-making and diagnosis, we must know about dual process theory and JDM bias. If you are not sure what those terms mean, listen in! We made every effort to break these complex topics down to a simple 15 minutes. Tune in for Pat’s final thought, which relates to how improving our knowledge of JDM bias might help prevent the extreme of diagnostic failure. Dr. Pat Croskerry, MD PhD, is a professor in emergency medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. For the past 10 years, he has been Director, Critical Thinking Program, Division of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, at that same institution. Trained as an experimental psychologist, Dr. Croskerry went on to become an emergency medicine physician and found himself surprised by the relatively scant amount of attention given to cognitive errors. He is one of the world's foremost experts in safety in emergency medicine and in diagnostic errors. He is humble, honest, and thoughtful; read this interview for more insight into his background and work in the emergency department (https://psnet.ahrq.gov/perspective/conversation-withpat-croskerry-md-phd).
