Ep55: Qatar GP and McLaren’s monumental mistake

Late braking, fastest laps, pole positions and a sprint win at the Qatar Grand Prix saw a welcome return to Oscar Piastri’s top form. However, in the main race, McLaren failed to pit both drivers on lap 7 of 57 when a safety car was deployed, when every other car on the grid did pit. To add complexity to race strategies, it was mandated that the maximum a tyre could be used for was 25 laps, making Qatar a mandatory two-stop race. McLaren’s failure to pit under safety car effectively handed Max Verstappen the win, in a race that had Oscar on pole and Lando qualify P2. It was a disaster class in race strategy.
