Ep71: How to use points to fly, stay, and get into Formula 1 hospitality for (almost) free
What if your frequent flyer points could get you driven through the gates at Albert Park, into the McLaren suite, and down to the team garage after qualifying? In this episode, Dianne Bortoletto sits down with Chris Chamberlin, freelance travel journalist and frequent flyer points expert, whose work appears in the Australian Financial Review, Business Traveller and Traveller.Chris breaks down how he pieced together an entire Middle East trip across five different frequent flyer programs, why he flew Emirates first class for the same number of Qantas points as a domestic reclining seat, and how a bottle of Dom Perignon P2 ended up in a paper coffee cup before landing. The conversation gets into the nuts and bolts of how to actually build a points balance without changing how you spend, how hotel loyalty programs and airline partnerships stack on top of each other, and why Singapore Airlines is worth paying attention to if you are serious about reward seats. Then it gets interesting for Formula 1 fans. Chris was hosted by Hilton at the Melbourne Grand Prix to experience what is possible when you bid your Hilton Honours points for an F1 hospitality package. He describes being driven through the Albert Park security fence while the crowd held their cameras up, wandering into the McLaren garage after qualifying, and watching the car being dismantled with FIA scrutineers standing by. The same experience went to auction for 660,000 Hilton Honours points, which Chris breaks down into a cost comparison that makes it look surprisingly competitive against a cash Paddock Club ticket. This one is worth a pen and paper.Find Chris Chamberlinhttps://www.instagram.com/chris_chamberlin/ https://www.instagram.com/chris_chamberlin/Subscribe to my Away We Go Substack for Formula 1 destination travel stories: https://awaywegopodcast.substack.comPlay Along: Predict the Podium: https://awaywegopodcast.com/play-along/Website https://awaywegopodcast.com Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/away-we-go-podcast/id1783230663 Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/4zhYpuRy3mL6y44ZERI0X6 YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@AwayWeGoPodcast Substack https://awaywegopodcast.substack.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/awaywegopodcast/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@awaywego.podcast Facebook https://www.facebook.com/awaywegopodcast LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/away-we-go-podcast Threads https://www.threads.com/@awaywegopodcast

Ep70: Miami F1, Kimi’s pole and win hat trick making history and Ferrari send Ciara into depression
After a five-week break, Formula 1 returned with an action-packed sprint weekend in Miami, and it delivered chaos on lap one, big performances up and down the grid, and plenty to unpack (including another round of Ferrari frustration).Host Dianne Bortoletto is joined by Ciara Gillan from Formula Live Pulse to break down the Miami Grand Prix feature race and sprint, key moments, strategy calls, penalties, and what it all means heading into the next round. In this episodeMiami GP recap: the layout, the challenges, and why this sprint weekend felt especially hecticFeature race results and the standout drives of the weekendMax Verstappen’s lap-one spin and the recovery charge through the fieldKimi Antonelli’s performance, stamina, and what this win could mean for the championship pictureMcLaren’s weekend: pace, strategy, and how the two drivers were managedFerrari’s upgrades: what changed, what didn’t, and why it still feels like a familiar storyStewarding and penalties: what happened, what felt inconsistent, and why delays matterNotable incidents: Isack Hadjar’s crash and reaction, plus the Gasly/Lawson incidentWilliams’ double points: a much-needed boostSprint race recap and what we learned from the shorter formatPrediction game chat: who nailed it, who forgot, and who’s leading the leaderboardMiami delivered one of the season's most dramatic races, from Max Verstappen's full 360 spin on lap one to a last-lap disaster for Charles Leclerc that had the stewards busy well into the night.Kimi Antonelli became the first driver in Formula 1 history to score his first three pole positions and convert them into three consecutive race wins, and Dianne Bortoletto and Ciara Gillan from Formula Live Pulse break it all down, including how Kimi climbed out of the car with shaking legs after holding off Lando Norris for the final 20 laps, and what Toto Wolff called his best win yet. They cover the full feature race and sprint results, Verstappen's remarkable recovery drive after the spin, Ferrari's much-hyped 11 upgrades that went largely unseen, the controversial 20-second penalty handed to Leclerc on the final lap, and the ongoing question of whether the FIA can deliver timely stewarding decisions in a sport where cameras are everywhere. Also discussed: McLaren's single-strategy approach and what it means for Oscar Piastri's title hopes, Alpine's quietly brilliant season, the Isack Hadjar retirement meltdown that no one could look away from, the Gasly-Lawson incident that could have been far more serious, and the Franco Colapinto fan base situation that Di has thoughts on.Plus, Di shines a light on Melbourne singer-songwriter Magdalia, who wrote a Formula 1-inspired song and has Di's full endorsement. Ep67: Fashion, Culture and the Untold Stories of Formula 1, with Esme Buxton of The Paddock Journal
What do you do when you photograph one of Formula 1's most compelling personalities, pitch the story to every major magazine, and get knocked back by all of them? If you're Esme Buxton, you build your own magazine.Esme is a fashion photographer and the founder and editor of The Paddock Journal, a Formula 1 fashion and lifestyle publication that launched just over a year ago and has already become one of the most distinctive new voices in the sport. Based in Cheltenham, England, she joins Di this week to talk about how a single photoshoot with F1 TV presenter Laura Winter became the catalyst for something she never quite planned, but couldn't stop once it started. In this episode they get into what it actually took to produce a print magazine in just over two months, with a team of three people and no publishing experience between them. The debut issue featured Cadillac F1's chief brand advisor Cassidy Towriss on the cover, shot on location in Miami, wearing her own wardrobe of couture Dior, including a piece lent to Jennifer Lawrence for the Oscars. Esme talks about what it was like to spend time with Cassidy, why her story deserved to be front and centre, and what the experience of building the magazine from the ground up actually looked like behind the scenes. They also talk about the moment Susie Wolff told Esme she knew and loved The Paddock Journal, the editorial philosophy behind a publication that deliberately seeks out the voices in Formula 1 that rarely get heard, and why Esme believes the sport's fashion and culture scene has been dramatically underserved by media for years. And if you're someone who has ever wondered how to break into Formula 1, Esme has a clear and genuinely encouraging answer for you in this one.Plus, The Paddock Journal Atelier: a fashion showroom and styling experience launching at Monaco and Silverstone this season in partnership with the Pop-Up Hotel, where fans can shop motorsport fashion brands, work with a stylist, and attend events including a gala at Silverstone. This interview was the inspiration behind Away We Go's own Substack https://awaywegopodcast.substack.com.The Paddock Journal / https://thepaddockjournal.com The Paddock Journal on Instagram / https://www.instagram.com/thepaddockjournalYou’ll find more photos and videos on the Away We Go Podcast social media channels:YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok | Threads |and also on SubstackOr drop us a line at [email protected] support means the world to us - please rate and review our show on your favourite podcast listening app, we might even read out your review next episodeFormula Live PulseApp: Formula Live Pulse is the ultimate second-screen experience for F1 fans. Ep65: Back-to-back for Kimi, back in the car for Oscar — Suzuka delivered
Kimi Antonelli won back-to-back races at Suzuka to become the youngest championship leader in Formula One history, and he did it while sipping sparkling rose water on the podium — because at 19, Japan's legal drinking age of 20 means he wasn't allowed champagne.Oscar Piastri returned from his race absence to lead for 15 laps and finish second, and the result raised a lot of questions about what both drivers are capable of this season.Di and Ciara break down the race from Suzuka — the 5.8-kilometre, 18-corner figure-of-eight circuit that has been part of the Formula One calendar since 1987 — covering Kimi's terrible start from pole, his recovery, and the safety car timing that proved decisive.Ollie Bearman's 50G crash, triggered by the new regulations' sudden power clipping, is a major talking point. Carlos Sainz made the point that if the same incident had happened on a street circuit with no runoff, the outcome could have been very different — and he's calling on the FIA and Formula One management to use the five-week break to find a solution. The episode also gets into Oscar Piastri's performance in context — he hasn't started a race this season, yet out-qualified his teammate to start third and led the Grand Prix. Di and Ciara discuss what that says about his talent versus the car beneath him, and where McLaren might go from here. Then there's Ferrari, where Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton nearly made contact mid-race and the team dynamic — or lack of one — is becoming harder to ignore.Other topics this week: Lewis Hamilton's deep personal connection with Japan and what shaped him as an athlete; the Japanese fan culture of swapping friendship bracelets, rewatching the race on the big screen after it ends, and taking every piece of rubbish home; Fernando Alonso is a new dad; and Jonathan Wheatley is out at Audi.Away We Go is now on Substack — writing at the intersection of Formula One and travel. Subscribe to Away We Go on Substack: https://awaywegopodcast.substack.comThe Japan travel guide is live on the website, and next week's episode features Japan expert Tess Moone from Tess Somewhere.Creator of the week: Irish comedian Carl Mullen, who makes very funny Formula One content. Ep 64: Shanghai Grand Prix and China travel guide; F1 journalist living in Beijing, Reilly Sullivan
F1 journalist Reilly Sullivan left Sydney, moved to Beijing, and came straight out of the Shanghai paddock to talk to us. This episode is part race review, part travel guide, and part honest conversation about what it is actually like to pack up your life and move to China.Reilly covers his first Chinese Grand Prix from inside the media centre, one of the most impressive press facilities on the calendar, purpose-built when China joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2004, and talks through what race-by-race media accreditation looks like for a freelance journalist working their way into the paddock. On the race itself: Kimi Antonelli winning in his second ever grand prix, the sprint weekend delivering genuine excitement, and why Reilly thinks Antonelli could go all the way for the championship this year. He also caught a quick word with Nico Hulkenberg about the April race break, and Hulkenberg's response was one of the most measured things said by anyone in the paddock all weekend. On China: Beijing versus Shanghai, the realities of moving somewhere genuinely unfamiliar, learning Mandarin from scratch, and why the Chinese Grand Prix should be on your Formula 1 travel list.We also get into the 2026 regulations, active aerodynamics, Boost Mode, Lift and Coast, and whether the new era is actually delivering the racing it promised. To read Reilly's latest story where he interviews Zhou Guanyu, click here. Ep63: Kimi's first win, Lewis’ first Ferrari podium & a nightmare for McLaren
Shanghai delivered one for the history books. Di and Ciara break down the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, a race that had it all, DNSs, DNFs, a teenage winner, Ferrari back on the podium, and both McLarens failing to even start.Italian driver for Mercedes Kimi Antonelli becomes the youngest ever F1 pole sitter and converts it to his maiden race win in only the second race of the year, and the second season of his career. Di gets emotional. Very emotional. After Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton battle all the way in one of the most entertaining Ferrari vs Ferrari battles in years, it was Lewis Hamilton who took the third step on the podium, his first wearing red. This brings his total to 203 podium finishes during his 20-year career, and his 10th top-three finish in Shanghai. With George Russell finishing second in his Mercedes, and Kimi’s race engineer Bono (Hamilton’s long-standing race engineer when he was at Mercedes) representing the constructor, it was a very special podium. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, who still claims Lewis as ‘his driver’ even though Lewis is driving for Ferrari, was clearly very moved. We, too, were feeling all the feels. The SprintIt was a Mercedes front row lock out on the grid for the sprint. Kimi Antonelli had a horrible start and finished in 5th. George Russell took the Sprint win with Ferrari locking out second (Charles Leclerc) and third (Lewis Hamilton).McLaren's nightmareBoth Piastri and Norris DNS from the main race with separate power unit issues. Two races in, Oscar Piastri hasn't completed a single feature race lap. Piasti finished the sprint in 6th, Norris in 4th.Max Verstappen fights back from P13 to P6 before a mechanical failure ends his race early. Red Bull are struggling but Di and Ciara aren't writing them off.F1 NewsMercedes reportedly in talks to buy a 24% stake in Alpine - could it become a junior team? And what does that mean for Flavio Briatore? No racing in April, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are off the calendar, leaving a five-week gap after Japan.Predict the PodiumThe Away We Go prediction tracker leaderboard update see Di top the leaderboard with her secret second account. They've confirmed it won't appear in Melbourne but is likely targeted at low-downforce circuits like Baku and Monza. The Exhaust Wing — A small piece of bodywork positioned just behind the exhaust redirects exhaust gases through the rear wing to manage airflow. A similar concept was used in 2010 before being banned. Ferrari's implementation is nearly impossible to replicate because it's intrinsically tied to the dimensions and positioning of their bespoke gearbox differential. Other teams would need to rebuild their entire gearbox — a 2–3 month process — to attempt it.According to Motorsport.com, Ferrari may have as much as half a second advantage over the field. The 2026 Power Unit & Energy System — Simply ExplainedThe 2026 regs bring a 50/50 split between combustion and hybrid power, making energy management more critical than ever before. What's gone: The MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit – Heat), which recovered energy from exhaust gas flow. It was highly effective but enormously complex. What's staying: The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic), which recovers energy under braking. The result: Drivers must Lift and Coast (ease off the throttle before braking zones) more than ever before to recharge the battery. This could paradoxically increase on-track battles, as drivers lifting early will allow following cars to close up on the straights.Boost Mode — A traditional engine map that's always been in F1. Drivers can deploy extra power whenever they choose, at their own risk of draining the battery.Overtake Mode — New in 2026, this replaces DRS. It can only be activated when within 1 second of the car ahead and provides an additional 0.5 megajoules of electrical power. Strategic deployment is everything — use it at the wrong point on a circuit and you'll arrive at the next straight with zero battery support. As Simone puts it: "It's like Fast and the Furious — pressing two buttons for a huge boost. But use both at once and you'll have nothing left to defend."Team-by-Team SnapshotFerrari — Strong reliability in testing (same engine used in both Barcelona and Bahrain). Engineering innovations hint at a genuine title challenge. Ferrari fans, it might finally be time.Red Bull / Max Verstappen — New in-house Red Bull Powertrains engine. Max ran 10,000+ km across four power units. Never write him off. As Zach Brown once said, he's the horror movie villain who just keeps coming back.Mercedes — Top of the mileage charts at 20,000+ km. Reliable, prepared, and watching everyone else carefully.Aston Martin / Honda — The biggest concern heading into Melbourne. Only 2,000 km completed due to battery vibration issues causing failures. Adrian Newey's car also appeared aerodynamically unstable on track. The team has admitted the problem exists; whether it's solved by Australia is unknown.Audi — New to the grid as an independent power unit supplier. Completed around 5,000 km in testing — significantly more than Honda but with visible battery depletion issues (watch the Audi onboard: mid-straight RPM drops are alarming).Williams — Missed Barcelona entirely as the car wasn't ready, but showed up well in Bahrain. Simone expects a performance similar to 2025, when Williams finished fifth in the Constructors' Championship with two podiums.Cadillac — Complete unknowns, but they arrive with the only driver pairing outside McLaren and Ferrari that features two race winners. Watch this space.Racing Bulls — Home to the grid's only true rookie in 2026, Arvid Lindblad. Paired with Liam Lawson. Racing Bulls has shown it knows how to develop rookies (see: Hadjar, Lawson). Expect growing pains, flashes of brilliance, and a steep learning curve.Drive to Survive Season 8 — Worth Watching? The team has watched several episodes and the verdict is mixed. The consensus: it feels increasingly orchestrated and less spontaneous, with key moments either missing or staged. Ciara notes that the Williams-focused episode leaned heavily on Carlos Sainz's storyline at the expense of other narratives. Di is frustrated that as a real fan, she already knows what happened — and Netflix's retelling doesn't always match reality.Still worth a watch for newcomers to the sport. Just don't expect season one.🌏 Australian Grand Prix — Status UpdateThe Australian GP is confirmed to be going ahead as scheduled. Due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East (Dubai and Qatar airports disrupted), Formula One freight and personnel are being rerouted through Asia and the United States. Logistics are complicated — keep an eye on updates closer to race week.Australian GP Corner Named After Two Women in F1The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has named Turn 6 at Albert Park after Laura Müller (Race Engineer, Haas / Esteban Ocon) and Hannah Schmitz (Head of...

Ep60: Ciara Gillan: Building Formula Live Pulse, Ferrari Loyalty and Why She’s Back for 2026
This week on Away We Go Podcast, Di sits down with Ciara Gillan — co-founder of Formula Live Pulse and now a regular voice on the show for the 2026 season. You’ve heard Ciara on race recaps. You’ve heard her talk strategy, telemetry and team politics. But this episode is about her. From asking “too many questions” during races (Simone’s words) to co-building one of the most data-rich second-screen experiences in Formula 1, Ciara’s journey into the sport is refreshingly modern — and unapologetically curious. How Curiosity Built an AppCiara didn’t grow up glued to sports channels. She knew Formula 1 was there — always hovering in the background — but access was limited. It wasn’t until she started watching regularly with her partner (and Formula Live Pulse co-founder) that the questions really started. And they didn’t stop. Those questions exposed a gap: fans wanted deeper context, clearer data, and access to the conversations happening behind the broadcast. That curiosity became Formula Live Pulse — an app delivering:Live telemetryFull team radio transcriptsRadio playbackTyre and pit strategy dataFantasy league featuresPulse Picks (vote your driver of the race)Community chat during sessionsCoverage of F2, F3 and F1 AcademyWhat began as “stop asking me questions during the race” evolved into a global platform serving fans who want more than the TV feed.Ciara talks candidly about building the app, expanding it beyond F1, and why she’s proud of what it’s becoming.Ferrari, Carlos & Underdog EnergyIf Ciara has to pick one team? It’s Ferrari. Always. She knows it’s complicated. She knows the anxiety is real. But that love-hate relationship is part of the identity Ciara Gillan interview - Feb 2….As for drivers:She’s drawn to Oscar Piastri’s humility and composure. She admires Charles Leclerc’s self-critical honesty. And she has a particular soft spot for Carlos Sainz — not just the charm, but the “racing brain.”Ciara is fascinated by drivers who think strategically, who understand the bigger picture mid-race. It’s not just speed that impresses her — it’s intelligence under pressure.Beyond F1: The FilmmakerOutside of Formula Live Pulse, Ciara is a filmmaker and producer based in Berlin. She studied film, worked across animation, visual effects and audio, and now runs a production company developing projects between Ireland and Germany. One of her recent short films, The Head On Him, is currently streaming on Disney+ — a milestone she speaks about with quiet pride Ciara Gillan interview - Feb 2….At heart, she’s a writer. Fiction. Crime. Stories she’s still mulling over, waiting for time to sit down and write properly. There’s something fitting about that — a strategist in racing and a storyteller off it.The Final ThreeCiara’s answers tell you a lot about her:Race she’d attend: Miami — for the energy, the spectacle, the atmosphere.Destination she’d visit (non-race): Japan. Culture, food, language — the full immersion.Driver she’d holiday with: Lewis Hamilton. Elegant, curious, layered. She’s interested in what’s beneath the surface — in people as much as performance. Why This Conversation MattersCiara is analytical, ambitious, creative and opinionated — exactly why she works so well on race recaps. This episode gives you context for the voice you’ll be hearing all season. And if you’re watching the 2026 season with Formula Live Pulse open on your second screen, now you know the story behind it.Listen now, subscribe, and get ready for a big season ahead.Formula Live PulseApp: Formula Live Pulse is the ultimate second-screen experience for F1 fans. Ep57: Bernie Ecclestone, Murray Walker and Daniel Ricciardo - Matt Clayton’s interviewed them all
Formula 1 and motorsport journalist and podcaster Matt Clayton has worked in F1 for close to 30 years. He pioneered Formula 1 podcasting back in 2010 before, erm, everyone became a podcaster. Matt sits down with Di and his thoughts about the 2025 F1 season, McLaren’s papaya rules, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and of course Oscar Piastri. He also shares stories of Bernie Ecclestone’s tactics to control interviews and the incredible headlines he generated around the country for two days, sitting down with Daniel Ricciardo and interviewing the voice of Formula 1, Murray Walker. You can listen to Matt Clayton and co-host Michael Lamonato on Fox Sports Pit Talk Podcast .I hope you enjoy our conversation.#abudhabigp #abudhabiF1 #F1wdc #worlddriverschampionship #landonorrisF1champion #LandoNorris #oscarpiastri #mclaren #F1podcasts #murraywalker #maxverstappen #papayarules #kimiantonelli #lewishamilton #ferrarif1 #f1drivers #redbullf1 #mercedesF1 #mattclayton #murraywalker #bernieecclestone #danielricciardo Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels:YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTokHelp shape the future of the podcast. Ep56: Abu Dhabi GP crowns 35th Formula 1 Champion
No yellow flags, no safety cars and no contact. The final race of the 2025 Formula 1 season was tense, because of what was at stake, but also quite boring as far as race action goes. With Australian Oscar Piastri trailing championship leader by 16 points, his McLaren team mate Lando Norris, cinching the title was going to take more than pure race craft. Oscar needed a miracle, “a Bradbury”, especially with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen also in striking distance trailing the lead by 12 points.Max took pole position in Abu Dhabi and finished the race on the top step, enough to secure second in the F1 World Drivers Championship. Piastri, who qualified in third, did a mega over take in lap one, passing his team mate to take and hold second position. All Norris needed to secure the WDC was third place, which he accomplished.Dianne Bortoletto is joined by Ciara Gillan from Formula Live Pulse and together they unpack the final 2025 race, celebrate Lando Norris’ win and catch up on the news of the week which has seen a change in drivers on the grid.#abudhabigp #abudhabiF1 #F1wdc #worlddriverschampionship #landonorrisF1champion #LandoNorris #oscarpiastri #mclaren #skysportsF1commentary #F1TVcommentary #maxverstappen #kimiantonelli #georgerussell #lewishamilton #charlesleclerc #ferrarif1 #f1drivers #redbullf1 #mercedesF1 #cadillacF1App: Formula Live Pulse is the ultimate second-screen experience for F1 fans. Ep55: Qatar GP and McLaren’s monumental mistake
Late braking, fastest laps, pole positions and a sprint win at the Qatar Grand Prix saw a welcome return to Oscar Piastri’s top form. However, in the main race, McLaren failed to pit both drivers on lap 7 of 57 when a safety car was deployed, when every other car on the grid did pit. To add complexity to race strategies, it was mandated that the maximum a tyre could be used for was 25 laps, making Qatar a mandatory two-stop race. McLaren’s failure to pit under safety car effectively handed Max Verstappen the win, in a race that had Oscar on pole and Lando qualify P2. It was a disaster class in race strategy. Dianne Bortoletto is joined by Ciara Gillan from Formula Live Pulse and together they unpack the McLaren costly mistakes, again, talk about Ferrari’s woes, and also sing the praises of Carlos Sainz, who finished the race with his second podium for the season. Di also was in Melbourne for the F1 Exhibition launch, which is well worth going to, Book at https://f1exhibition.com/. And it’s HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY to the podcast! One year of weekly episodes! Thanks so much for listening. With just one race to go, Abu Dhabi, it’s still a three way fight with Lando Norris 12 points ahead of Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri is a further 4 points behind Max. It’s all to play for and the championship could go to any one of them. #qatargrandprix #qatarf1 #mclarenfail #LandoNorris #oscarpiastri #mclaren #skysportsF1commentary #F1TVcommentary #maxverstappen #kimiantonelli #georgerussell #lewishamilton #charlesleclerc #ferrarif1 #f1drivers #redbullf1 #mercedesF1 #cadillacF1 #sergioperez App: Formula Live Pulse is the ultimate second-screen experience for F1 fans. Ep54: Las Vegas GP double McLaren DSQ keeps Piastri & Verstappen in contention
The Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix has kept the World’s Drivers Champion wide open after both McLaren’s were disqualified after the race because the rear skid plates under the car were less than 9mm in depth. Dianne Bortoletto is joined by Ciara Gillan from Formula Live Pulse and together they break down the race, the championship, and what needs to happen for Oscar Piastri or Max Verstappen to beat Lando Norris in the Drivers Championship. They also talk about Ferrari’s woes, Lego’s pink Cadillac and Cadillac’s hopes, and they congratulate the winner of F1 Academy. Di also recounts an uneasy encounter with an actor when she was in Vegas. Max finished first ahead of Norris, and in third was George Russell in the Mercedes. Kimi Antonelli crossed the line in fourth place but with a 5-second penalty for a jump start placed fifth, behind Oscar Piasti who was promoted to fourth. None of that mattered because after the race Lando and Oscar were both disqualified scoring no points, promoting George Russell to second place, Kimi Antonelli into third, and awarding Max Verstappen with 25 points. Lando Norris, currently leading 24 points ahead of McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri, who is tied on 366 points with Max Verstappen, but Piastri sits higher on the leaderboard with 7 race wins to Max’s 6 this season. In a strange twist, the disqualification plays in Piastri’s favour with a smaller gap to championship leader Norris. With just two races and one sprint to go, it’s still a three way fight and the championship could go to any one of them. Ep52: Sao Paolo delivers highs and lows, Lando storms, Max attacks, and tough times for Piastri
The Formula 1 Sao Paolo Grand Prix in Brazil delivered plenty of action on the track and the results have upset the Australian apple cart. McLaren’s Lando Norris drove an impeccable weekend in both the sprint and grand prix, qualifying on pole and finishing on the top step of both. While Norris fans are joyous, Piastri fans are deflated after a DNF in the sprint and 10-second time penalty in the race where he finished fifth. Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes has his highest finish ever in the race, Max Verstappen charged with another super-human performance to finish on the podium, and it was a disaster for Ferrari with a double DNF. Where does this leave Piastri’s championship hopes? And for the first time in Australia, we were treated to a choice of F1TV commentary or the usual Sky Sports commentary team. Which did you prefer?Jason Beste, former chef with the Mercedes F1 Team, joins Di to chat about all the action. Ep51: The two-seater F1 car, Nicole Piastri, and the best car on the planet, an interview with Stephen Corby
Stephen Corby is one of Australia’s leading motoring journalists, who “very occasionally gets to cover F1, and wishes he could do so more often”. Sitting down with Di, Stephen recounts the weekend with Nicole Piastri and the surprising things she said about Oscar, his interviews with Mark Webber, the Monaco Grand Prix and how he ended up in a jacuzzi with a Euro pop star, and witnessing the utterly unbelievable “crash gate”.Stephen describes in detail the sheer exhilaration of driving the Ferrari F80 and what it was like to be a passenger in the world’s only two-seater Formula 1 car, an experience that completely changed the way he views F1. A little longer than our usual episodes, there are just so many good stories told by Australia’s most entertaining motoring journalist, Stephen Corby. Ay caramba! The 20th race of the 24-race season, the Mexican Grand Prix, was thrilling and exhausting in equal measure. So much action on the track, and lots of off-track excursions too. Lando Norris scored the grand slam in Mexico City at the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix; pole position, he led every lap, and he convincingly won, putting him the lead in the World Drivers Championship by the narrowest of margins, just one point. Oscar Piastri has been battling with the car for the last three grands prix and finished in 5th after qualifying in 7th, but showed the Piastri fight that we haven’t seen so much of in recent times. Piastri did seven overtakes in the race, more than any other driver (if you exclude the team orders switch back between Antonelli and Russell). There’s also a fight in the Constructors Championship for the coveted second spot, which Ferrari clinched, now ahead of Mercedes by just one point. Ollie Bearman in the HAAS scored the team’s highest ever finish, almost making Di cry (seriously, she wells up). And Monique is back after being away unwell for the past two weeks, and has news to share. The championship battle is on, and you can bet that the last four races are going to deliver an exciting end. Ep47: After the Singapore Grand Prix, there can be no more ‘Mr Nice Guy’
McLaren might have sewn up the Constructor’s Championship in Singapore on the weekend, but the race has left fans fuming at the inconsistent ‘Papaya Rules’. George Russell was dominant and won convincingly, Fernando Alonso was awarded ‘Driver of the Day, and Carlos Sainz made up 10 places to finish in the points, but all of that was overshadowed with what happened on lap 1 between the McLaren teammates. Australian and leader of the F1 World Drivers Standings, Oscar Piastri, copped a pretty hard bump from his teammate Lando Norris during a brazen overtake move. Deemed a first lap incident, which Di and Mon don’t disagree with, but they have A LOT to say about how the team is not taking charge. There’s no denying that McLaren is not protecting their leading driver in the championship. Singapore as a destination has so much to offer tourists from high tech attractions and modern art to great shopping if you know where to go, and cheap, delicious food. #SingaporeGP #Singapore #SingaporeF1 #SingaporeanGrandPrix #OscarPiastri #LandoNorris #papayarules #mclaren #MaxVerstappen Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels:YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTokHelp shape the future of the podcast. It might have been a non-race week, but that doesn't mean Di and Mon didn't have plenty to talk about. Ep45: SIX RED FLAGS and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
It defies belief, but this weekend's qualifying in Baku brought out not one, not two, but SIX red flags. History has been made, and not for the right reasons. Despite the carnage in setting the grid, the race was relatively uneventful after the opening lap. Though we did see some less familiar faces gracing the podium steps, which we're always here for. While we definitely had our eyes on the interval times in that DRS train that nobody could get off, we also kept an eye on things outside the circuit. Baku is a city that has interested us for a long time, and we looked into some of the things you can do there. Apparently, you can visit a carpet museum shaped like a rolled-up carpet, and, if you're a regular Anthony Bourdain, there are plenty of places you can go to try traditional dolma or qutab.Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep42: Flags, Failures and Firsts, the Dutch Grand Prix has changed the game
The Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort certainly delivered a thrilling race. As Monique describes it, flags, failures and firsts. The home boy hero, Max Verstappen, finished second along with a first-timer on the third step, adding a mega feel-good factor to an action packed race. #DutchGP #ZandvoortF1 #netherlandsF1 #DutchF1 #OscarPiastri #LandoNorris #IsackHadjar #MaxVerstappen Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep 38: Hungarian F1 Grand Prix dishes up the unexpected
Anything but predictable, the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix was full of surprises (even for a certain Ferrari driver!) and unexpected results. Ferrari’s first pole of the season, two Aston Martins qualifying in the top ten ahead of Max Verstappen who qualified eight. In fact, it was the closest qualifying in Formula history. Strategy played a big role in the race result that Monique (reporting from a super yacht in Croatia) and Di unpack. Budapest is also a beautiful travel destination with delicious lesser-known food. Ep 37: A wet Belgian Grand Prix and an Aussie winner
In Di's own words: "The Belgian Grand Prix was exciting, then a fizzer". What could have been an action-packed wet race was mighty mundane after the first ten or so laps, with just one driver daring to try a different strategy. But, Belgium (the country) makes up for Belgium (the race) with beautiful architecture and some pretty bangin' national dishes, which Di and Mon have some fun reminiscing about.WEBSITE: www.andawaywegoF1podcast.comSPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/4zhYpuRy3mL6y44ZERI0X6?si=349a8a2ac71c454bAPPLE PODCASTS: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/and-away-we-go-f1-podcast/id1783230663YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvSDU4_nOOs0PN5vd4GdkXQSend us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Huge news in Formula 1 this week with Red Bull team boss Christian Horner sacked with immediate effect. Over the last few days, we’ve read the news and the speculation continues. Did IT happen again? Ep34: British F1 Grand Prix, Hectic AF, history made and a harsh penalty for Oscar Piastri
The Formula 1 British Grand Prix did not disappoint. Wind, rain, sunshine and rain again, and again, brought the safety car out more times than changes to Red Bull’s second seat. The best story of the weekend was Nico Hulkenberg’s first podium finish after 15 years and 239 races. McLaren’s Lando Norris took the top step to be the hometown hero winning his first British Grand Prix, but we hardly talked about it because THAT penalty that was served to Oscar Piastri ruined his chance of a sure victory. Mr Cool Calm and Collected no more, Oscar was salty. What did you think about Oscar Piastri’s 10-second penalty? Was it fair or too harsh? We know we’ve never seen him angrier. Five DNFs and lots of on-track drama ensued at Silverstone, making this year’s Formula 1 British Grand Prix as entertaining as ever. Lots of juicy rumours are flying around and Di & Mon discuss some of them ahead of the silly season. We chatted about some ideas of where to stay when going to the British Grand Prix and an English classic was on the menu at Mon’s house.#britishF1 #silverstone #britishgrandprix #nicohulkenberg #hulkenberg #hulkenbergpodium #landonorris #piastri #oscarpiastri #f1rumours @formula1 Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep33: Austria F1 Grand Prix, the McLaren Fight and first thoughts on F1 the movie
Flying solo this week, Di recaps all the action from Spielberg at the Austrian Grand Prix. While Monique is living her best travel writer life on board a cruise in Svalbard seeing polar bears and kayaking through icebergs, Di revelled in the thrill of the race. The fight between the McLarens is well and truly on with Lando Norris qualifying on pole and leading the race, with a tenacious and hungry Oscar Piasti nipping at his heels for the first 20 laps. It made for exciting racing. Surprising DNFs from world champions and crowd favourites, and some rookie mistakes that almost saw Australian Oscar Piastri out of the race. Knowing that the internet rarely plays nice when cruising (Di had to miss our Canadian F1 ep as a result of weak signal), we prerecorded Monique’s race predictions for Austria, and also for Silverstone next week. And yes, Di did rush out to see F1 the Movie. While Dianne is away, the internet doesn't want to play, so Monique is holding down the fort and hosting this episode solo. Unfortunately, there's no banter between friends, and no poking fun at Di for having to watch the entire race weekend in French because, though she's in Italy, the cruise ship she's on is French. But, there's plenty of praise for Lando despite his 'stupid' mistake, and even more for Kimi Antonelli and his first-time podium.#F1montreal #F1canada #CanadianGrandPrix #CanadianGP #f1 #formula1 #f1predictions #f1podcast #f1insights #formula1podcast #f1fan #womeninpodcasting #podcastshorts #podcasthighlights #andawaywego #andawaywegoF1podcastSend us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep30: Binging on F1: The Academy and making tough calls on who to put in the car to replace Stroll
Though there wasn't a race to keep us occupied this week, we managed just fine with seven episodes of F1: The Academy to get through on Netflix. Spoiler alert: we loved it. Why? You'll have to have a listen. While we're free of racing action, we also tackle the hard questions—like who we'd put in the car to replace Stroll while he's injured, and which driver on the current grid we think would have the best autobiography—and play a quick-fire round of association.LINKS:F1: The Academy: https://www.netflix.com/no-en/title/81722244#f1 #formula1 #f1predictions #f1podcast #f1insights #formula1podcast #f1fan #womeninpodcasting #podcastshorts #podcasthighlights #andawaywego #andawaywegoF1podcast #F1academy #F1TheAcademySend us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep29: Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix, a Max Verstappen moment, and a touch of Spanish food inspiration
We can all thank Mercedes, a dodgy power unit, and a terrible Red Bull tyre strategy for this week's Grand Prix action. The race, held in Barcelona, was a bit of a bust until lap 55, when Kimi Antonelli's car, once again, failed him. A safety car, cheap pit stops, and a poorly chosen three-stop strategy meant there was a whole lot of action in the closing few laps. It was primarily 'Mad' Verstappen.Di has some choice words about Verstappen and his temper, while Mon mostly reserved hers for Flavio Briatore. They thought much more positively about Barcelona, with Mon throwing in a hot tip about where to place yourself on the plane flying in, and Di sharing a cool bar that was once Pablo Picasso's residence. If you're into Spanish food, you're in for a treat this week. We're sharing not one, but TWO fabulous recipes, and some cool food tours you can do with a fellow Australian travel writer. Ep28: Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, failed new rule and Monaco travel tips
To spice up the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, the FIA introduced a mandatory two-pit stop rule where drivers had to use two different compound tyres. After a lot of hype and talk about this new rule, it made the race oh-so-utterly boring. Di describes it as a ‘snooze fest’.The best part? Australian Oscar Piastri on the podium getting a little bit mixed up when the trophies were being handed out. Monique and Di have both been to Monaco several times and share the things they love about the Principality, what you should see and do when there, and some tips on where to stay if you are planning a trip to the Monaco GP. Monique also talks about two Monégasque dishes. What are your thoughts on the two pit stop rule? Ep27: F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix - it was all in the safety cars and strategy
Considering Imola is a race track the commentators kept telling us was 'a hard one to overtake on', this year's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was anything but boring. We lost count of the number of overtakes we saw on track. And, we couldn't possibly discuss the race without mentioning the gold-standard overtake and the two safety cars that completely changed the game.Unfortunately, Mon wasn't allowed to repeat the very short and succinct voice message she sent Di when *that overtake* happened, because we have a 'no swearing' policy on the podcast. Though Di did come close to breaking that rule when she found out Mon didn't get the chance to cook anything from the region for race day...SHOUT OUTS:Ord Valley Musterhttps://ordvalleymuster.com.au/Osteria Francescana by Massimo Botturahttps://osteriafrancescana.it/Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep26: The F1 season so far...Alpine, Antics, Lifetime Bans and Lego
We're only six races into the 2025 F1 season, but it feels like we've been through a whole lot more together. Just in the last week, we've seen a Doohan demotion, a team principal departure (ciao, Ollie Oakes), and one of the current drivers' dads eyeing off top spot at the FIA. Naturally, we tackle all of this and more in this week's episode of And Away We Go F1 Podcast.Send us a textSupport the showYou’ll find more photos and videos on the And Away We Go F1 Podcast social media channels: YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | TikTok Help shape the future of the podcast. Ep25: F1 Miami Grand Prix - Aussie hat trick! So much to unpack
We love sprint weekends! This one was full of action; we had the youngest ever F1 pole sitter, a rain-delayed sprint race, penalties and DNFs in both the sprint and the main race, and some very cool sponsor activations. The best part? Australian Oscar Piastri scored a hat-trick in winning the Miami GP, and continues his charge at the top of the F1 World Drivers Championship. It’s the first time a McLaren driver has won three back-to-back races since 1997/1998, when Mika Hakkinen did it. There’s also a whole bunch of Miami chat—fake lashes, fake tans, and fake boobs is how Di imagines the city to be—and Monique gets her grump on about Netflix and the ‘Hollywood effect’. Ep23: F1 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix - Australians have waited 15 years for this
It was glorious back-to-back wins for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri who now leads the F1 World Drivers Championship, the first time an Australian had led the WDC since Mark Webber in 2010, Piastri’s manager. Max Verstappen put up a fight, but getting his elbows out cost him a five second penalty, and perhaps, ultimately the race. While Max was angry with the race result, third-placed Charles Leclerc was ecstatic to give Ferrari their first F1 race podium of the 2025 season (not counting Lewis Hamilton’s Chinese sprint race pole and win). And what even is one one-hundreth of a second? Di and Mon talk about some luxury accommodation in Saudi Arabia, some new projects under construction to attract tourists, and the difference between an Arabian kabsa and a Bahraini kabsa. What’s a kabsa?
