EP57: Dr. Johanna Shapiro Part 2! Narrative vs. medical listening

If you are like me and are not totally familiar with the difference between narrative and medical listening, listening to this episode can make a difference in how patients are listened to. There is a difference between the medical story and the patient story, although they are closely intertwined. Dr. Johanna F. Shapiro, PhD was Director of the Program in Medical Humanities & Arts, in the Department of Family Medicine, at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She is a Professor Emerita in Family Medicine. She received her PhD from Stanford University. Her research interests have been focused on the patient narrative and the doctor-patient relationship, communication skills, and literature and medicine. She has written extensively on teaching empathy in medical education. She is also a poet, and here is a link to one of her powerful poems.
