Episode 12: Climate Change and Its Impacts on Africa

The use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas to power the global economy in the last 200 years has led to the emission of trillions of tons of greenhouse gasses, which have led to an unprecedented warming of our planet's atmosphere within that short period of time. In recent years we have seen growing numbers of disasters linked to climate change and are also facing slow-onset impacts such as sea-level rise. Statistically, Africa contributes relatively little to global carbon emissions, but unfortunately will be one of the most affected areas of the globe in terms of climate impacts. This is due to a mix of exposure to climate impacts, underlying vulnerabilities and limited adaptive capacity. This podcast discusses some of the climate impacts on African countries and on how African countries might be able to adapt to the global climate emergency. It looks at climate change and Africa through a climate justice perspective. Further, it explores some of the similar risks that African countries and Indonesia face in regard to climate change and how Indonesia could on the one hand learn from African climate initiatives and on the other hand support climate action in Africa.
