Episode 18: Expensive Exposure

from 280+ Podcast · host Los_Def

In this episode I link up with photographer and former model, Brittany Nicole as well as model and MUA Ashley Cosby. We delve into their experiences with modeling and even break down some pros and cons for parents considering to get their children involved in the craft. Later we talk about the current gender climate of photography and a growing trend of male photographers that don't create comfortable work environments. We also talk about Brittany Nicole's residency at The Parliament Arts Organization and plans the organization has to exposure the community to the arts via painting, photography, acting, etc. Plus Fried Crab Legs, Colorism, and whether men like to be choked during sex!    Overall exposure is an innumerable expense especially for those in front of the camera when they are constantly devalued, scrutinized, and exploited, so maybe exposure should be more expensive for the people behind the camera since they tend to reap a majority of the benefits from the art. Topics/Timestamps   (2:58) In Your Mentions: Fried Crab Legs, Seafood aphrodisiacs, guys that like to be choked during intercourse, and Ashley leaving the video vixen life behind and she's currently undergoing a social rebrand   (12:28) Literally role 'Modeling': Brittany and Ashley talk about their positive and negative experiences modeling and how they both were inspired by relatives to get into the craft. As a child model Brittany faced a rude awakening on many levels which taught her the importance of representation in the modeling world. Ashley still loves to model but something has taken the fun out of it.    (18:56) Pay Me My Rate: Here we talk about how photographers and videographers attempt to use the promise of "exposure" in an attempt to devalue even though the model is often the key source of the marketing plan behind these brands and companies.    (20:59) Child Modeling/Colorism: Based on their experiences we assess whether or not these ladies would introduce their children to this lifestyle. Then we talk colorism in the beauty world and the responsibility it entails to recognize and reject it at all costs.    (28:17) Gender Disparities/Knowing Your Brand: Creepy male photographers that  groom and ultimately cross the line and make their models feel uncomfortable. The importance of having more female photographers, and establishing your brand when in front of the camera.    (37:39) Parliament Arts Organization: This nonprofit arts group in York, PA has big plans to bring arts to the community by teaching and also being a staple resource for artists and brands of all types.   (42:17) Brittany Nicole new art exhibit: We talk about her gallery opening, the Ladies of the 80's photo collection, the inspiration and how she put all this together. Getting out of her comfort zone in creating this exhibit.    (53:00) Leaving the Corporate World: Brittany talks about her first full week working for herself and the fears that come with being monetizing her passion. Ashley has a way to build her business as a Make-up artist that requires her to work smarter, but not harder   (59:10) Song of the Summer/Wrap-up
