Episode 20: Legal Rulings v. Cultural Rumblings
from Washed Up in DC · host Colin Mullaney and Abigail Cavizo
This week on Washed Up episode 20, Abigail Cavizo and Colin Mullaney break down the recent Supreme Court ( #SCOTUS ) rulings in the cases of Mahmoud v. Taylor; Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton; and .#Trump v. CASA, Inc. We read straight from the first case's appendix, so that you don't have to — including a page from one "controversial" children's book. Shoutout Justice Sotomayor for her dissent; the majority ruling 6-3 favors parents who want to opt out their children from lessons with #LGBT content, for religious reasons. Plus, our homegirl, the Honorable Justice Amy Coney Barrett, is back again — this time with a ruthless takedown of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on nationwide injunctions. We've missed #ACB since her last spotlight in episode 9. Then — as we have a habit of burying the lede on this show — the #Diddy #verdict was handed down by a jury last week, which has most people PISSED. The jury may have let Diddy off easy, only found #guilty on his more minor charges — but what cultural repercussions will continue to ripple out for years and decades to come, as a result of his vile behavior? The plea deal of self-admitted murderer Bryan Kohberger is another huge #breakingnews legal development, with enduring cultural impact. Despite his admission to killing four #Idaho students in 2022, some are still angry with how the plea deal was orchestrated, with surviving family members split whether Kohberger deserved the death penalty. To cap it all off, a discussion of #rankedchoicevoting in the recent #NewYorkCity democrat primary, which saw #zohranmamdani prevail over former NY governor Andrew Cuomo.
