Episode #244: Healing Amnesia: Overrun by Old Patterns

from Tea Time w/Amie & Bev · host Amie Wade

In moments of discomfort, pain, or suffering, it’s easy to forget the transformative tools and techniques we’ve gathered on our healing journeys. This “amnesia” often pulls us back to the comfort of old limiting beliefs, habits, and patterns. Despite knowing better, our innate programming can overpower our progress, steering us away from practices that foster growth and renewal.  Why does this happen? When faced with emotional, physical, mental, or spiritual distress, our brain seeks familiarity for survival. Healing tools, be it mindfulness, self-compassion, or therapeutic practices, can feel unfamiliar compared to ingrained habits of avoidance or self-criticism. Pain creates urgency, and we instinctively revert to what feels instinctive, even if it hinders us.  The key to overcoming this is intentional practice, even in small moments of discomfort. Building resilience involves revisiting healing techniques regularly, so they become second nature during crises. A supportive environment, reminders of progress, and self-awareness are crucial in retraining our minds to seek healing rather than regression.  Healing isn’t linear, and setbacks are natural. However, with conscious effort, we can gradually replace old programming with empowering habits, transforming struggle into an opportunity for deeper growth. The journey requires patience, but the reward is a life lived with greater freedom and peace.  May this conversation be beneficial to your life journey.
