EPISODE 264 - That Mummy Guy
from Who Asked You? · host Chase Shumway
I flex my Trek muscle today. You’ll hear lots of little Trek tidbits as we’ve got two big stories from the final frontier. It’s a shame our other resident Trekkie, Jabari, misses them. Go to guest-host, John sits in for him though this week. More on those STAR TREK stories in a moment. First, we get into talking about TV shows we changed the channel to avoid when we were kids. Dennis starts us off saying he hated HAPPY DAYS and was always glad to grab the clicker when it started. Mine, of course, was FAMILY MATTERS, Mike was not a fan of M*A*S*H, John couldn’t watch FACTS OF LIFE and Charlie just turned the TV off. I probably should’ve turned the TV off when ENDANGERED SPECIES came on. It’s a 2003 film starring Eric Roberts and Arnold Vosloo. If you don’t know who Vosloo is, he was Imhotep from THE MUMMY. We didn’t really know that until last night on the show. I think most people simply call him ‘that guy from THE MUMMY’. You’ll hear my brief review of this movie. However, I think the review may be longer than the time it took them to write the script. So now, onto the STAR TREK news. Michael Dorn had thrown out an idea a couple of years ago about doing a new TV series based around Worf. The idea spread pretty quickly, but it seemed it was dead when you know who took over the franchise. Now, in a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Dorn reignited the idea saying it got pretty far in development. It even got to the pitch stage where there were several discussions with Paramount and CBS. And it’s still in the works. He says he’s finished a script and hopes the studio will look at it soon. Also hoping to catch the studio’s attention are the folks behind the 2007 fan film STAR TREK: OF GODS AND MEN. You may recognize some of their names, Tim Russ, Ethan Philips, Garrett Wang and Walter Koenig just to name a few. They’ve all been working hard with other cast and crew from previous TREK shows to come up with a pilot episode they can pitch to CBS. They’d like to see it become a web series. They’ve been running an Indiegogo campaign (I mistakingly say Kickstarter on the show, but there was one of those too) to raise money for the shoot. They’ve gotten enough cash so far to build some physical sets and extend their shoot by a few days. Their ultimate goal is to raise around $200,000 so they can build a set of their new starship’s bridge. Dave Chappelle was heckled while on stage by a rowdy Connecticut audience recently and it was all caught on camera phone. In the video Chappelle sounds tired and isn’t really doing his stand up routine, but rather bullshitting with people in the front row. At one point when members of the crowd are jeering him he makes it clear he’s only staying for the 25-minutes with which he’s contractually obligated. The video became the subject of an opinion article on Ebony.com which rubbed Dennis the wrong way. He felt the article’s author, Lesli-Ann Lewis made the crowd out to be racist. But just from watching the video, we all agreed that’s not the case at all. And as Charlie — someone who has done some stand-up comedy — points out, sometimes you just have off-days. And I agree. As I said, Chappelle sounded tired, perhaps exhausted from his touring and maybe didn’t want to put up with a bunch of annoying assholes. What do think? Watch the clip and read the article, then send up your thoughts. We run out of time for a couple of stories I tease at the top of the show. I’ll save those for next week. I do squeeze in a bit of Breaking News though. A new strip club in Atlanta opened just in time for Dragoncon, a four-day convention celebrating pop culture, science fiction, fantasy, comics and more. The club is right up the convention’s ally. It’s called Jabbu’s Hut. Spelled with a ‘u’ for legal reasons. Its goal is to offer up sexy sci-fi sirens ready to strip off a costume from your favorite anime or sci-fi show. The club’s owner hopes to offer sexy cosplayers from all sorts of movies, TV shows, anime and comics. He even wants a few strippers inspired by real world scientists! We get busy throwing out names of characters we wouldn’t mind getting a lap dance from and that carries us all the way to the end of the show.
