Episode 27: Aging Gracefully - Specifically With Pain

from The Berman Method · host Jenni

*Today we are talking about aging gracefully - specifically with pain. (2:00): A lot of people think pain is a normal part of the aging process. That they have to live with and deal with.(2:55): Usually after we get into our 30s, things will start creeping up. We start to just blame it on getting older. (4:00): Usually around 50 or 60, we are fully circum to the idea that we are just getting older, and it comes with that. (6:00): Jenni will see a lot of mothers who for the first couple of years put their child first, and then will come to Jenni ready to better themselves. (7:05): So getting them back on track with eating properly and strengthening back their core and glute muscles. (9:16): An experiment for everyone - grab a backpack and put a 10 pound weight in it. Put the backpack on backwards, so resting on your chest/stomach, and just walk around your kitchen for 10 mins and you will start to feel yourself lean backwards to counteract the weight in the front. That is just only after a couple mins, imagine that after a couple years. (11:18): Our skeleton is relatively the same person to person, so with 20 extra pounds it will put a strain on that skeleton. (12:53): Your knees have no chance and neither does the lower lumbar when there is just too much excess weight. It is insane to see it visually in the picture that Jenni has in her office.(13:09): So many people who have a normal body weight, when they start to get in their 60s - 80s they start to get aches and pains. They think it is a normal part of aging. (13:38): Pain is not a normal part of aging. (14:27): Why does anything get inflamed? It is overworked and underpaid. It could be a muscle, joint, tendon, or ligament. (16:50): Generally, as we get older, the muscles in the front of the knee gets stronger than the muscles on the back of the knee - that forms an imbalance. This will lead to grinding and inflammation. (19:05): What causes the pain after a knee replacement, if the joint is new? The surrounding soft tissues become inflamed. (20:23): Candidates for knee replacements should begin to have their whole body evaluated to see if there is something else causing the pain - this is hard because there are too many cookie cutter clinics. They do not have the time to focus on quality but on quantity. (21:19): Unlike Jake’s clinic. They focus 100% of their attention on you - they charge a ton of money (they are out of network) to look at you for an hour to check your entire body to see what is going on. (22:35): Your gut health can also cause joint pains as well. (22:50): Take home message: Just because you are getting older, does not mean you need to live in pain. Just because your x-ray says x,y,z does not mean you need to live in pain. (23:30): The number one cause of pain is muscle imbalance. (25:00): If you are in pain, it does not have to be that way. Ice, medication, and stretching is treating the symptom not the problem. Join us on social media - Facebook: @bermanwellness , @physicaltherapynaplesInstagram: @berman_wellness, @bermanphysicaltherapyEmail us - Check Us Out On Social Media - Facebook: @bermanwellness , @physicaltherapynaples, @Berman Golf Instagram: @berman_wellness, @bermanphysicaltherapy , @Berman Golf Youtube: Berman Golf, Berman Physical TherapyTikTok: Bermangolf, BermanwellnessEmail us - [email protected] [email protected] Check out our website - www.bermanpt.com www.bermanpt.com/wellnesswww.bermangolf.com
