Episode #275: They Should Know Me by Now

from Tea Time w/Amie & Bev · host Amie Wade

It’s easy to fall into the belief that someone should just know what we need, want, or feel, especially if they’ve been in our lives for years. We assume history equals understanding, and when they miss the details, like our favorite coffee order, what triggers us, what we meant by “I’m fine” when we clearly weren’t, it can feel like rejection. The story becomes, “If they cared, they’d remember.”  People are not mind readers. And longevity doesn’t automatically translate to emotional intimacy or attentiveness. Sometimes, people are simply wrapped up in their own world. Sometimes they’re not taught how to tune in. And sometimes it might reveal a gap in emotional investment. But more often, it’s a gap in communication.  Expectation without expression is a setup for resentment. If we don’t ask for what we need or clarify what matters, we leave room for assumptions and disappointment. Healthy relationships thrive on clarity, not telepathy.  So next time you catch yourself thinking, “They should know by now,” pause and ask, “Have I told them clearly? Recently? Without blame?” Loving connection grows through conscious care, not silent scorekeeping.  May this conversation be beneficial to your life journey.
