Episode #291: When the Inner Child Still Feels “On the Spot”

from Tea Time w/Amie & Bev · host Amie Wade

There’s a moment, maybe in a meeting, maybe during a conversation, when someone asks you a question and suddenly every eye turns your way. Your mind goes blank. Your stomach tightens. And before you can even form a thought, the scared little version of you whispers, “If I don’t answer fast, I’m in trouble.”  That reaction isn’t incompetence. It’s conditioning.  Many of us grew up with adults who demanded immediate answers, especially when they were angry. Hesitation wasn’t allowed. Silence meant consequences. So we learned to scramble, explain, defend, and “get it right” before the storm hit. And now, decades later, your nervous system still believes you’re that child standing in front of an upset parent.  But here’s the truth: you’re not that child anymore.  Being in the now gives you the chance to notice the old fear rising, without letting it take the wheel. When your heart speeds up, when your brain freezes, when shame starts creeping in… pause. Breathe. Let your adult self step forward.  You’re allowed to say, “I need a moment,” or “Let me think about that.” You’re allowed space. Every time you choose presence over panic, you whisper safety to your inner child. And slowly, gently, you rewrite the story, one grounded breath at a time.  May this conversation be beneficial to your life journey.
