How important is forgiveness in the Christian life? Christ tells us not with answers but with the shape of a story — a man forgiven much, who then refuses mercy to another. We are left to reckon with the “as” of the Lord’s Prayer: forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. What we give, we receive. What we withhold, binds us. Christ does not flinch from saying so. And still — even still — He offers us the path back.
