Episode 306 - Transforming the Canine Care Industry One KleanBowl at a Time, with Alex Mckinnon

from The Poodle to Pitbull Pet Business Podcast · host Dom Hodgson

Have you ever had an idea for a pet product and wondered how to take it to market? Then tune in because in episode 306 I'm talking to Alex McKinnon of Kinn Inc, who has successfully taken a bunch of products to market that help doggy daycare and boarding businesses save time and money, have sustainabilty at the heart of the design AND also employs disadvantaged people.  Alex was born in Florida, but travelled all over the US, and ended up at Duke University where he studied History and Spanish.  His passion for all things Spanish led to him moving to Barcelona where he worked in a coffee shop before being hired by Braun to work on product innovation. He went back to the USA to study and got his MBA in international business and finance, before working and living in Germany working on Brauns coffee products division.  In 2011, after moving back to the USA Alex discovered that a lot of vets were struggling to give dogs medication, so he developed a pill crushing product.  Through further research with his vet friend, Alex discovered that simply putting a dog bowl in a dishwasher doesn't kill salmonella and a bunch of stomach viruses, which ultimitely led to the creating of Kinns flaghip product, the Kleanbowl.  Alex talks us through the whole Kleanbowl joureny, including the research, design, manufacture and marketing of his amazing product.  Tune in to discover;  * The value of doing time studies in your pet business to see where you, and your staff can be more efficient * How speaking to client about the problems they are facing will lead you to develop a profitable pet product solution  * Why pet production innovation is about product iterration, as you'll rarely get it 100% right the first time.  * The breakthrough moment when Alex realised he was in the time and money saving buiness, rather than the sanitation and environmental business.  * How the right kind of feeding bowl can change the canine world! Alex is a super smart and passionate pet professional and you'll get SO much value from hearing his inspirational story.
